I grew up on a farm in Ohio and from an early age I loved to tinker with things. My first big success was when I was 10 and fixed a toaster-oven my parents were about to throw out. Now I get to do it with people!
I have a wife and two energetic young children who I get to goof off with. They have to deal with parents who have small businesses (my wife owns bang! a great little restaurant near our home in Denver). So our time is spent running errands and working weekends when other families are out enjoying Colorado. I’ve managed to carve some time in the summers to take the kids fishing for a week though.
I just began running marathons a couple years ago (although to call it “running” is quite a stretch!). This has been a great way to test some of my theories for my books. It’s also a simple way for me to stay in shape so I can keep up with my kids!
If you decide to come in, you’ll find I like to keep things casual yet focused. I want you to feel relaxed and confident we will get to the root of your problem. This is the way I like to run things and most of my clients like it too. Mine is not a bustling clinic with lots of staff–it’s just me. You and I will work together to fix your pain and you will leave feeling like you finally have the answers to your problems.
Most of my approach to helping people with chronic pain comes from the physical therapy research staff at Washington University. Dr. Shirley Sahrmann and her colleagues have been conducting research in human movement and pain for years. Her first textbook came out in 2002 and she now has a second that was recently published. The information in her texts is quite dense and I’ve found that many health care practitioners feel overwhelmed by them. That is why I’ve written my Fixing You series–to translate this cutting-edge research into information anyone can use.
I also use my blog to think out loud about things I’m learning from my patients. This is a great way to get to know me and see how I help people. My other goal with my blog is to help people understand they are not alone. That people with similar issues are being helped.
